Vodka production can be traced back to as early as the 9th century in Russia and the 8th century in Poland. Its name comes from the Russian word for water, "voda," or "woda" in Polish. It was initially intended for medicinal purposes before it evolved into the bar staple it is today, and much like gin, it wasn't always the pristine and smooth drink we know today. Because it was so cheap and easy to make, many European farmers started making the drink at home. It eventually got so out of hand that in the 1700s, the Russian government had to regulate its production to noble houses. Then, In 1864, Pyotr Smirnov started his own distillery and named it after the French spelling of his name: Smirnoff. During World War I, Vodka found its way to the United States, thus starting its global reach.
Vodka's alcohol content typically ranges between 37.5% and 56% alcohol by volume (ABV).
Vodka is made by fermenting the grain, corn, potato (or anything with sugar and starch), then distilled as many times as needed, and water is added afterward. The more times the Vodka is distilled, the clearer the liquor is, and the process gets a smoother mouthfeel. In the 8th century, Poland made its first Vodka by distilling wine instead of grains or potatoes, making it closer to brandy than the Vodka we know today.
Vodka is traditionally drunk straight, whether taken as a shot or sipped. More often than not, though, you can commonly find Vodka mixed into a cocktail. Due to its neutral flavor, it works really well with any juice or mixer. In fact, it's such a versatile spirit that it can even be used in cooking, usually in pasta sauces. To take your Vodka to the next level, you can infuse it with citrus, berries, or herbs, like strawberries or rosemary, if you're feeling adventurous.
Plain Vodka, Its neutral base makes for a smooth drink whether enjoyed neat or on the rocks, and it can also be enjoyed in a cocktail. For more discerning palettes, depending on the Vodka, it may have earthy or herby-tasting notes, along with pepper and maybe even bread!
Vodka made from potato, corn, and grains also differs slightly in flavor.
Vodka made from wheat is the most common type, and these types are known for their smoothness and clarity.
