People continue to be confined to their houses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so many of us have turned to watch series and films in their homes as a way to unwind and relax. We Filipinos have always shown a love for dramas and romantic comedies, but we now have more options now more than ever, with countries like South Korea and China also producing quality shows. One place that gathers local favorites along with the finest Asian dramas is WeTV.

What better way to cap a long day than watching a series or film that blends comedy and romance, with a glass of wine in hand? Here are some of Boozy’s best wines that you can pair while watching these series and films: (Download the WeTV App here to win VIP Access! Full details at the end of this article.)

My Rebound Girl

1. Asti Martini Rosé (My Rebound Girl)

With an enticing aroma, delicate notes of raspberry and wild rose, and citrus acidity, the Asti Martini Rosé is a Demi-sec sparkling wine that usually serves as an aperitif. This fresh and exuberant sparkling wine is made up of a unique blend of aromatic grapes that include Moscato and Ancillota. A film that is just as sweet as the berries in this wine when it comes to romance is the 2016 Filipino film My Rebound Girl. Starring Alex Gonzaga and Joseph Marco, it is about a coffee shop owner who creates a list of dating guidelines to avoid heartbreak, only to be challenged when she meets her business partner. The film is an equal blend of humor and romance that is similar to the perfect mix of different grapes in the Asti Martini Rosé.

B&B: The Story of the Battle of Brody and Brandy

2. Carnivor Cabernet Sauvignon (B&B: The Story of the Battle of Brody and Brandy)

B&B: The Story of the Battle of Brody and Brandy is an original series that began streaming on WeTv in February. It stars Iza Calzado as an innkeeper who manages a bed and breakfast in the countryside and Ian Veneracion as a businessman who checks in at her establishment. What makes this series different is that compared to other Filipino series, B&B made a bold decision to feature main characters who are in their late 30s and early 40s. Similarly, the Carnivor Cabernet Sauvignon has been described as a bold, smooth, and refined red wine. This boldly blended wine has hints of rich blackberry, caramel, and smooth toasted oak, and pairs nicely with red meats, along with a romantic comedy that breaks norms in terms of its bold choices for its lead actor and actress.

Miss Crow with Mr. Lizard

3. Moet & Chandon Imperial Rose (Miss Crow with Mr. Lizard)

The Rosé Impérial has been described as a spontaneous, radiant, and romantic expression of the famous Moët & Chandon style characterized by a bright fruitiness, a seductive palate, and elegant maturity. A show that is as radiant and romantic is the Chinese drama Miss Crow with Mr. Lizard. The series not only blends romance and drama but also adds fantasy, as it focuses on a character who undergoes a heart transplant that renders him unable to have any strong emotions, including love. While you watch this drama to discover whether someone in his condition can still fall in love, having a glass of the Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial would serve as a great companion.

What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim

4. Heartland Shiraz (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim)

As an Australian wine, the Heartland Shiraz has an intense color, balanced structure, and appealing texture. It is a wine with an aroma of anise and cracked pepper that is covered in classic blackberry while also having an echo of mint. Meanwhile, a South Korean drama that adds a dark layer to its usual blend of romance and comedy is 2018’s What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim. Starring Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young, the series is about the vice-chairman of a large corporation and his highly capable secretary. When the secretary surprisingly resigns after nine years, the vice-chairman will do everything he can to find out why, as the characters also discover a past trauma that they shared.

Hello Mr. Gu

5. Hardys VR Merlot (Hello Mr. Gu)

With a light crimson and red color and fruit aromas of plum and cherry with dried herbs and a subtle vanilla oak, the Hardys VR Merlot is another red wine that should be considered as a companion while watching series or dramas. A series that would go well with this wine with a fine tannin structure is Hello Mr. Gu, a new series from China. The show features two characters with contrasting personalities and lifestyles that are accidentally intertwined by a contractual marriage, during which their relationship grows over time. The Hardys VR Merlot, just like the characters on this show, may grow on you as a go-to wine once you try it.

Legend of the Blue Sea

6. Jacob's Creek Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir (Legend of the Blue Sea)

If you’re up for a series that blends romance and fantasy, then Legend of the Blue Sea may be just for you. Starring Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho, this South Korean drama centers on the love story of a con artist and a mermaid who travels far and wide in order to find him. The unlikely pairing of a mermaid and con artist shouldn’t work, but it does, and the drama’s blend of romance, humor, and fantasy makes it an enjoyable watch. Similarly, Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir boasts of fresh fruit flavors and yeast complexity that was achieved through the cross blending of vintages during assemblage. The combination of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes in this wine works, just like the blending of multiple genres in this series.

Whether it’s a popular series from South Korea, China, or even one of your local favorite films, watching these  would go nicely with a glass of some of the best wines that Boozy has to offer.
