First… Whiskey or Whisky?

Is it whiskey or whisky? Both “whiskey” and “whisky” are correct in spelling. The difference boils down to their country of origin. Use “whisky” if the drink was made in Scotland, Canada, or Japan. When referring to drinks from the United States or Ireland, we use “whiskey”.  Whisky derives from the Gaelic term usquebaugh which means ‘water of life’. Throughout history, people shortened it to uisge and then eventually called it whisky. The Irish added an “e” just to be able to distinguish their product in the market.

Whisky is a generic term for grain alcohol, aged. How you age it, how long you age it depends on the country. The grain of whisky changes the name. Traditionally, all whisky is made from 4 grains. Majority of whiskies are made of corn, barley, rye, wheat, or any combination of those four.
